At Ella Design Group, we specialize in creating thoughtful, eclectic spaces that effortlessly mix past and present, color, textures and patterns, and styles. This allows us to give each client a custom, one-of-a-kind space that reflects their passions. A truly eclectic space that works is something that looks like it was curated over time and not just thrown together. While, yes, you can curate a space over years, as interior designers, we have the expertise to give you the timeless, sophisticated look that just looks like it took a lifetime to pull together. Here are some ways we design eclectic spaces:

  1. Combine Old and New – We love using antiques and more contemporary pieces in the same space. Blending old and new is really a key to creating a purposeful eclectic space that looks like it was slowly and thoughtfully collected over time. As an added bonus, using antiques and vintage pieces is eco-friendly because they already exist and no more resources are being used to create them. We look for quality, interesting antiques that tell a story and reflect the homeowner’s personality.

2. Embrace Artwork – Art is what pulls a space together and brings it to life. No matter how gorgeous a room is, if the walls are bare, it won’t look complete. The artwork isn’t something you choose last to wrap things up. We’ll actually often choose a painting or print first and it will serve as the inspiration piece for the entire space, including the color scheme and overall feel of the room.

3. Have Fun – Spaces don’t have to be stuffy to be beautiful. We love adding personal touches that really give a glimpse into the personality and life of the homeowner and add some whimsy and fun. We like to put our clients’ memories front and center and use some pieces that make them smile, whether it’s a souvenir from their travels or a quirky accessory they love.

4. Use Color and Pattern – Whether it’s on the walls or through fabrics and accessories, color is so important for an eclectic space. Pattern is also a key element and we’re all about mixing unexpected patterns and colors to create unique spaces. It does take confidence to expertly mix patterns that at first glance seem like they’d clash but ultimately work together. It’s a skill we’ve honed with experience. When unexpected patterns and color pairings are successful, the payoff is huge.

5. Shop Local – Another thing we really love to do is to incorporate some local finds. Things like reclaimed wood from the area, the work of a local artist or textiles from the region give a nod to where you live and add to the eclectic, curated feel.
